O n Oct. 28, 2025 Hurricane Melissa— one of the strongest Atlantic hurricanes on record —slammed into the west coast of Jamaica. It brought 185 mph peak winds, destroying 90% of homes in the Black River area and leaving at least 50 dead —a count that will surely rise as search and rescue continues.

Residents and local leaders from Chicago's south suburbs held a big welcome home party Sunday for a woman who had been stranded in Jamaica without her lifesaving medication after Hurricane Melissa ravaged the island nation. The celebration for Trinette Britt-Johnson, 58, was held at the Rich Township offices Sunday morning.

A Birmingham family returned home Saturday evening after being stranded in Jamaica for more than a week due to Hurricane Melissa.The emotional reunion took place at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport with flowers,

"I lost everything, all my things," he said. "We need food. We have no food."
