MUMBAI: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said that the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj collapsed days after its installation in Malwan as it was erected by those opposed to his true ideology.

Unveiling a Chhatrapati Shivaji statue in Maharashtra’s Kolhapur on Saturday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi attacked the BJP, saying the saffron party wanted to do away with the Constitution, which the Maratha warrior king had laid the foundation for.

Gandhi's comments appeared to target Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had previously apologised for the collapse of a Shivaji Maharaj statue in Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg district, which fell days after being inaugurated.

Rahul Gandhi criticized the BJP over the fall of Shivaji Maharaj's statue in Malvan, attributing it to ill intentions and accusing the BJP of attempting to undermine the Constitution. He emphasized Congress's intent to conduct a caste census and accused the Modi government of sidelining equality and constitutional values.

Speaking at the ‘Samvidhan Samman Sammelan’ in Kolhapur, Gandhi held up a copy of the Constitution, calling it a symbol of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s ideas.
