Doubling down on his trade wars, President Trump is threatening to raise taxes on many goods from Canada and punish Brazil for prosecuting his friend.
President Donald Trump has announced that the European Union and Mexico will face a 30% tariff on imports to the US from 1 August. He warned he would impose even higher import taxes if either of the US trading partners decided to retaliate.
The president said the blanket 35% would be on top of tariffs on certain sectors. That’s higher than the previous 25% rate.
Canada faces another set of tariffs in its ongoing trade talks with the U.S. However, in this latest round of tariff announcements, investors have learned to largely tune them out as negotiating bluster rather than policy commitments.
