The vehicle hit a crowd outside a club on Santa Monica Boulevard early Saturday, apparently on purpose, police said.

It was not immediately clear if the driver had been shot before or after the crash or why he drove into the crowd. Authorities said that 23 victims were transported to local hospitals and trauma centers.

The driver, who had been fighting with people inside a music venue, was shot after driving into a group of people on the sidewalk, the LAPD said.
