Hours after announcing the approval of Skydance’s merger with Paramount, FCC Chairman Brendan Carr touted the company’s commitment to “addressing bias & restoring fact-based reporting” at CBS News, among other things.
This initial authority for the FCC was set to expire on September 30, 1998, but was extended by Congress, and has been several times since. The most recent long-term extension was granted as part of the Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act of 2012, and expired on September 30, 2022.

Congress may look to exert more control over the broader auction authority of the FCC, Flick believes. “Perhaps in the future, if there is ever an auction of FM spectrum the FCC might need to get special authority from Congress to do it,” Flick said. “These are policy decisions, and Congress might want more of a say.
