But data and news reports about the first month’s arrivals show the majority of Alligator Alcatraz’s detainees do not have U.S. criminal convictions. President Donald Trump, federal officials and Florida Republicans touted the remote Everglades immigration detention centers — dubbed Alligator Alcatraz — as a place to detain people deemed the "worst of the worst.
Without permanent structures, electricity or running water, logistical headaches have emerged at “Alligator Alcatraz.”
Americans for Immigrant Justice confirmed to 8 On Your Side that a 15 year-old boy was briefly detained at Alligator Alcatraz earlier this month.
The meeting will address a proposal for corrections officers to transport ICE detainees from the Orange County Jail to immigration facilities, including “Alligator Alcatraz” in the Everglades. Elected officials and immigration rights advocates are planning to speak about Orange County’s involvement with ICE.
I’ve called, I’ve emailed everybody and their grandmother and their grandmother’s sister. Nobody emails you back and nobody calls you back,” said one immigration attorney.
ICE received additional funding from President Trump's "big, beautiful bill," and Alligator Alcatraz began operating.
Some people detained at the facility have violent criminal histories. But data and news reports about the first month’s arrivals show the majority of Alligator Alcatraz’s detainees do not have U.S. criminal convictions.
"Immediate action was taken to separate and remove the detainee in accordance with federal protocols," said Stephanie Hartman, a spokeswoman for the Florida Division of Emergency Management, which oversees the site.
