Meta has hired Mark Lee and Tom Gunter, two top engineers from Apple’s AI team, just weeks after luring away their former boss Ruoming Pang.

Meta appointed Connor Hayes, Meta’s VP of product for generative AI, to become the head of Threads, per Axios. Until now, Instagram head Adam Mosseri has been in charge of Threads. But the platform has grown into more than a side product of Instagram, necessitating additional leadership.

Meta describes the tool as a creative extension of personal identity in the digital world. The company said in a press release, “Imagine Me in Meta AI is now available in India. Users can generate photos of themselves in different scenarios, from ‘on the moon’ to ‘in a Renaissance painting’.”

Meta is using weatherproof tent structures to house AI infrastructure, in a bid to build data centers as quickly as possible.

Meta will begin removing monetization privileges and stop recommending content from accounts that repeatedly post unoriginal content, many times aided by AI.

Top members of Meta’s new Superintelligence Lab discussed pivoting away from the company’s powerful open source AI model, Behemoth, and instead developing a closed model. This would mark a major philosophical shift for Meta.

Many of Meta’s competitors have multi-gigawatt sites planned, including Oracle, Google, OpenAI, and Amazon. TechRepublic recently reported that Shark Tank’s Kevin O’Leary is building the world’s largest AI data center in Canada.

For Silicon Valley giants, getting ahead in the artificial intelligence race requires more than building the biggest, most capable models; they’re also competing to get third-party developers to build new applications based on their technology.
