USGS maps don’t stop at Earth. We’ve charted Mercury, volcanoes and all! 🌋🪐 In 2016, USGS collaborated with NASA, Arizona State University, Carnegie Institution for Science, and the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory to produce the first high-resolution topographic map of Mercury. The map captures the planet’s craters, volcanoes, and tectonic features in remarkable detail. To make this possible, USGS scientists developed advanced software and innovative techniques to process m

Congratulations Peter Kelly, the recipient of the USGS’ 2024 Dr. James R. Balsley Jr. Award for Excellence in Technology Transfer. Peter spent almost a decade designing, engineering, and perfecting a system of geochemical sensors for both portable and semi-permanent remote deployment called MultiGas. He then worked with an engineering firm so the technology could be available to scientists around the world. This allowed both the USGS and its international colleagues to acquire field-ready, auto-

#43YearsAgo at #MountStHelens, May 31, 1980: USGS personnel gather geologic field data, create maps, conduct research and spend hours in the lab analyzing samples. A year and a half later, 130 scientists dedicate USGS Professional Paper 1250—seven and a half pounds—to David Johnston. The volume summarizes the eruptive history of Mount St. Helens, monitoring efforts, effects of the 1980 eruption and analysis of potential hazards. The anthology of scientific papers documents a number of volcanic p

USGS scientists and mathematicians have teamed up to develop state-of-the-art computer simulations for one of Mount Rainier’s greatest hazards – lahars that begin as landslides high on the volcano’s flanks. The new computer simulations use D-Claw, a USGS open-source software package, that allows scientists to input specific characteristics of an event to predict how a flow would move across terrain over time. At Mount Rainier, attention was focused on Sunset Amphitheater and Tahoma Glacier Headw

USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory geologists observed lava roiling in the north and south vents at the summit of Kīlauea on Friday, November 21. Shortly after, lava flowed onto Halemaʻumaʻu crater floor for the first time since episode 36 (November 9). That activity continued through the weekend, with 73 overflows total. Over the past 24 hours, Kīlauea summit deflated and the overflows stopped, causing the forecast window for episode 37 to be adjusted slightly later in time. Episode 37 could occ

All volcanoes in the Cascade Range of Oregon and Washington are at normal background activity levels. Current Volcano Alert Level: NORMAL Current Aviation Color Code: GREEN During the past week, small earthquakes were detected at Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens, and Mount Hood. Field crews were at Mount St. Helens and Mount Rainier to finish installation of new monitoring stations. Last week, CVO staff installed five new stations along the White River, north of Mount Rainier in Washington state.

Here is video footage of the August 13, 2015 debris flow at Mount Rainier. Zachary Jones and Caroline Pedro were walking up the now closed Westside Road towards the Tahoma Creek Trail when they heard a loud rumbling. Zachary asked Carol what the sound was, she thought it might be a passing train. They kept walking and got to a clearing where they had a full view of Tahoma Creek. In the distance, they saw huge mounds of tree debris and boulders raging down the creek. Zachary said if we're gonna d

In the air and on the ground, HVO scientists are collecting data and assessing hazards for Kīlauea's middle East Rift Zone eruption. On September 18, 2024, around 3:15 pm HST, a fourth vent system opened just west of Nāpau Crater. Lava has been flowing over the western cliffs of Nāpau Crater and onto the crater floor. The S2cam provides a view of the lava falls: https://www.usgs.gov/observatories/hvo/s2cam-view-napau-crater-east-rift-zone-kilauea-view-southwest The eruption is occurring within a

This one went to 11... Episode 11 of the ongoing Halemaʻumaʻu eruption of Kīlauea within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park has come to an end. It started at 6:26 p.m. HST on February 25, and paused at 7:06 a.m. HST on February 26. The opening phases of the episode included fountains up to 600 feet high! This video clip by C. Gansecki shows those high fountains at about 8:38 p.m. on February 25 as seen from Wahinekapu (Steaming Bluff). Make sure you have the volume turned up... More information abo

Mount St. Helens, 36 years ago, May 18, 1980. He wept. USGS’ contract pilot Lon Stickney takes off south and angles up the Toutle. He has been flying the USGS scientists around the volcano for weeks. He flies directly to Coldwater II, sees where the trailer had been by the quarry, where he’d landed the afternoon before. He flies over the bare ridge for a half an hour and calls to the Forest Service plane: trailer gone, ridge swept clean, no David Johnston. Nothing lives here, he says. USGS scien

Research, monitoring, communication. Every day is #EarthDay at the USGS. Volcano monitoring and research conducted at the five US volcano observatories advances our understanding of active volcanoes and hazards, and enables the USGS Volcano Hazards Program to provide information and warnings of volcanic activity in the United States. Each observatory is assigned a geographic area of responsibility (Alaska, Hawaii, California, Cascade Range, Yellowstone). The observatories and their partner organ

Gas pistoning has been happening at Kīlauea today as episode 25 approaches. What causes this? Gas accumulates near the top of the lava column within the vent, causing the lava surface to rise (the "piston"). Eventually, gas escapes as spatter/lava is erupted, and lava drains back into the vent. You can watch this process in one of the three livestream camera views of Kīlauea summit available through the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory: V1cam: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oG5zz9Sjw3E V2cam:

#43YearsAgo at #MountStHelens, May 18, 1980, 9:20 AM: It was a roiling, twisted helix. USGS scientist Don Swanson speeds to Pearson Airpark and takes off at 9:20 AM. He was readying to drive to Coldwater II when the seismograph goes wild. He dashes up to the radio room and tries Dave Johnston but gets no response. Reports are of a huge eruption. From the plane, Swanson sees a tremendous gray column standing above Mount St. Helens. A roiling, dark column that pumps and convects, rotating up and t

The spectacular eruption of Mount St. Helens on May 18, 1980, electrified scientists and the public. The colossal landslide, northward-directed blast, and eruption column made news worldwide, and reconnaissance of the devastation spurred efforts to understand the power and awe of these moments and to communicate volcano hazards to the public. This week marks the 38th anniversary of the 1980 reawakening of Mount St. Helens. Follow this Friday feature that will summarize precursory activity–what w
