Hey Eastside night owls and early risers heading into Seattle! Westbound I-90 from Mercer Island to Seattle will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday, April 12, through 6 a.m. Saturday, April 13, for tunnel maintenance. Eastbound I-90 will remain open. The West Mercer Way, 76th Avenue Southeast and Island Crest Way (HOV only) on-ramps will close at 9:30 p.m. During the closure, our tunnel maintenance crews will perform regular, scheduled maintenance in the Mount Baker and Mercer Island Lid tunnels. Snow is falling pretty hard on US 2 Stevens Pass with some big snowflakes coming down. Here's one of our plows working westbound (look closely and you can see the little green laser light it uses to help guide its way). Traction tires are currently advised. You can check our passes page for conditions. Please be cautious, follow traction requirements, take it slow, give plows plenty of room and be prepared for any possible delays or closures. https://www.wsdot.com/traffic/passes/ | WSDOT

Traffic has a new workaround. The first mile of the new SR 509 Expressway between I-5 and 24th Ave. S. is now open. It’s an alternate route designed to help manage congestion on I-5 and other local roads. Try it free through summer! 👏 | WSDOT

Update Thursday 5:00 a.m.: I-90 over Snoqualmie Pass has reopened. Snow continues to fall on I-90 Snoqualmie Pass (here's a look at conditions from Tuesday). Our crews are still doing avalanche control work and we're planning to reassess the situation by about 9 a.m. There is still no estimate for the pass reopening. For other cross-state highways, US 2 Stevens Pass is snowing lightly, chains are required on all vehicles except AWD/4WD, oversized vehicles are prohibited and the pass will close a

UPDATE 12:30 p.m. Sunday: Work continues on reopening the passes and crews are managing massive amounts of snow and ice. I-90 Snoqualmie and US 97 Blewett passes will open later today, but we do not yet have an ETA. Please do not head out or start lining up at closure points until we provide an update in the early evening. When we are able to reopen passes it will be to get freight moving - any other trips should continue to be delayed as more work remains to make roads ready for general traffic

So, what exactly we were up to on I-405 this weekend? Take a look. Over the weekend, our crews completed demolition of the old 112th Ave SE bridge and installing a 200-foot-long culvert under northbound and southbound I-405. While the old bridge served us well for decades, the new bridge is longer to accommodate widening and additional lanes on I-405. The new bridge will also include direct access ramps to and from the express toll lanes, similar to the direct access ramps at Northeast 6th Stree

Quite a bit of activity in early July on our I-90 wildlife crossings, including this elk herd (and one deer) on the overcrossing and a deer-coyote encounter near Hyak. Clearly the deer and coyote have a long-standing beef given the time between eye contact and go time, and props on the victory prance at the end. We've already seen 107 elk crossing on the overpass just in the first week of July. | WSDOT

A couple of scary slides are fully blocking SR 20 and SR 971, and because the conditions remain unstable and unsafe for our crews to begin clearing, it's likely they will remain closed for several more days. A snow slide that's about 30-40 feet high and 150 feet long has SR 20 blocked east of Newhalem. Those stuck behind the slide are safe and have food and lodging available. SR 971 is blocked on the south shore of Lake Chelan by a rock slide estimated to be about 30 feet deep containing 5,000 c

Last week was challenging for travelers across our state during a storm that brought snow, ice, freezing rain, or all of the above. Not only for travelers, but also for our crews who worked 24/7 to plow and treat our roads to make things safer for everyone to get where they need to go. One of those crews was led by one of our Maintenance Techs, Dustin, who helped plow and treat our roads up in Whatcom County. Dustin took us for a plow ride along I-5 in Whatcom County, and gave us a behind-the-wh

Reminder! Plan for significant daytime delays approaching the State Route 104 Hood Canal Bridge 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 15. The bridge will reduce to one lane of travel while we replace a 16-foot hydraulic cylinder. We have to close one lane during the work for the large crane needed to lift the 6,000-pound piece of equipment out and replace it with a new one. We’re working in a tight space close to other critical parts on the bridge and need daylight to see. In this instance, the overhea

While Work Zone Safety Awareness month is winding down, our commitment to our road workers and work zone safety remain the same. We’ve shared stories of frontline crews, written blogs, shared photos and videos, talked with the media, lawmakers and ordinary folks like you and me! But the ongoing need to keep everyone safe remains unchanged. Road crews are spouses, children, grandparents, siblings and friends and they all deserve to go home to their loved ones at the end of their shifts. Please sl

Behind the scenes, at our Transportation Management Center and Emergency Operation Center, our teams monitor the roadways, respond to incidents, get vital information out to crews in the field quickly... and that's just scratching the surface. Our experienced emergency management staff advise crews on what’s actively happening across the region, coordinate with the national weather service, keep tabs on roadway conditions and shift resources. It’s all part of our commitment to make sure that dur

The Washington State Patrol (WSP) is partnering with WSDOT, the Towing and Recovery Association of Washington (TRAW), and the Washington Traffic Safety Commission (Target Zero) to conduct a “Move Over, Slow Down” campaign beginning this weekend and continuing through April. The majority of drivers understand the law requires motorists to move over or slow down for police, fire, and ambulance crews, but the law also includes tow trucks and work crews who have vehicles with audible or visual signa

While Seattle prepares to light up for the holidays, we’re preparing to unveil our own lights to improve safety and traffic flow in the heart of downtown. On Tuesday, Nov. 14, travelers on the northbound I-5 collector/distributor ramp and the Cherry Street on-ramp, near the exits to Madison and James streets, will see new ramp meters (a.k.a. traffic signals) shining bright red or green every day moving forward. Generally, they will turn on when morning traffic starts, and off after the evening c

Since northbound I-5 opened in downtown Seattle in the 1960s, there’s been two through mainline lanes along this stretch past Seneca Street. Working within our existing roadway, we moved existing barrier and restriped to create a third through lane to try and improve mobility along this section of freeway. We know we can’t improve traffic by just creating lanes, so this is part of a bigger project that includes new ramp meters, additional electronic roadway signs and adding another exit-only lan
